This article is dedicated to all the wonderful life partners out there.
Avan Paathi. Aval Paathi. Aval Ennil Sari Paathi. She is my better half. The greatest example of mutual understanding is Arthanareeswarar, where Lord Shiva and Shakti are depicted as equals. Similarly, Chidambaram Natarajar reflects this principle of balance and harmony. A family thrives when both the husband and wife are happy. There’s a popular saying in Tamil: “Manavi Amaivadellam Iraivan Kodutha Varam!” (A good wife is a blessing from God). Indeed, a wife has the power to make or break a family.
During Diwali, a popular TV pattimandram (debate show) explored the topic: Which type of family is better for Gen Z kids—Nuclear or Joint family? While both have their pros and cons, the jury concluded that nuclear families are better suited for Gen Z kids, with the caveat that parents must adjust their lifestyles to support their children. A bitter truth but a reality nonetheless.
It’s often said that behind every successful man is a woman. When families are happy, societies thrive, leading to happier cities, nations, and eventually, the world. The happiness of the world truly lies in the hands of the wonderful women on this planet.
I’ve always been a big fan of movies, and they have influenced me in various ways. For instance, the Tamil movie Pokkiri, starring Vijay, inspired me to take the IAS exams at the age of 30. The movie’s climax, where the hero is revealed as an undercover IPS officer, left a lasting impression on me. Media, whether positive or negative, has the power to plant thoughts. As the saying goes, thoughts become things. Let’s ensure that the media induces positive thoughts.
Recently, I’ve been reading about unhappy couples, especially those concerned about the future of Gen Z kids and their marriages. Social media has a massive impact on this generation. Many kids grow up believing the imaginary world of social media is real. They begin to think relationships can be swiped away as easily as an Instagram reel. Isn’t that a dangerous belief?
I even see people, as pillion riders on two-wheelers, scrolling through their phones incessantly. Why do we feel the need to use a phone while traveling on a two-wheeler? What could we possibly miss in those few moments? Swiper, no swiping! (as Dora the Explorer would say).
I firmly believe that kids learn through their parents’ actions, not just their words. A recent study highlighted that parents wish to instill positive habits in their children by leading by example. Connecting this to our topic, women play a pivotal role in creating happy families. They teach children character and, to some extent, even guide their husbands on what to do and what not to do. Every man could support their wife to do the role of a woman.
I’m blessed to have a life partner who values family above all else. Her name is Sumathi, and this article is dedicated to her and all the incredible women who nurture, guide, and hold families together.
Lessons:
- Parents must lead by example to instill positive habits in their children, as actions speak louder than words.
- Women play a central role in building happy families, shaping both their children’s character and the family’s harmony.
